The first map of the presence of jellyfish on the Italian coasts and beaches today is on your Android phone. Check if stinging jellyfish have been sighted in your beach and you see one, send your report.
Focus Meteo Meduse is in fact the first project of Italian "science of citizens", created by Focus and Focus.it in collaboration with the University of Salento.
Thanks to everyone's reports, we could create a detailed map and updated in real time of the presence of jellyfish in our seas. These data will then be used by the University of Salento to create a census of these species and study the phenomenon.
With this app you can:
- Report the jellyfish you see. The sightings will be checked by researchers from the University and scientifically validated. Remember, the more the reports are precise and complete, the more useful to researchers and swimmers who want to seek beaches not invaded by jellyfish will be useful;
- Consult the map of Italy and find out if you are in (or in which you planned your trip in the coast) have been sighted in jellyfish. The map is updated in real time and can be consulted by zooming on the places of interest or filtering the reports based on the period in which they took place either the species of Medusa sighted.
- Find out which are the most dangerous and stinging jellyfish;
- consult a rich section of questions and answers on jellyfish and methods to defend themselves from their "stings".
