This children's book story was inspired by my father-in-law's frustration in building the fence in his front yard. So in reality, Norman was actually fighting his fence!
Norman in real life is a man of few words who lives to work and takes pride in any task he starts. Even in retirement, he tackles endless home improvement projects-- only stirring his stifled ire to battle the next inanimate object.

I have not battled any fences lately nor any yard work, for that matter. Consequently, I have a front lawn that has turned from plush green velvet to a bleak shade of brown to match the dirt of the earth. Thankfully, I have pine trees to shed needles onto the brown. I now call it "woodsy." Perhaps that's why my mother-in-law, Judy, endearingly refers to me as "an indoor cat."
I do, indeed, prefer to sit indoors. I like to sit and write short nonfiction narratives-- with a glass of dry Chardonnay within reach-- of myself, my friends, family, and of my daily mundane existence. I attribute the source of my writing to Lord Byron's famous quote, "The truth is stranger than fiction." Well, I at least start with the truth, and perhaps embellish from there...

If you are wondering about Lucy, she has since passed. But while she shared time on this earth with Norman and Judy, she had plenty of helpings of anything edible you can imagine. As for the flute, she never ingested one to my knowledge. If she did, she'd bark to beat The New York Philharmonic. That's just the type of dog she was.
