Drifting is the act of turning a corner as fast as possible using maximum power to counter the vehicles straight line inertia that would otherwise take the car off the road and into a tree or over a cliff. You essentially point the car into the corner, plant the throttle and control the turn with prayer and burning rubber. Actually prayer is a great way to describe the process. There is much that can go wrong as the sport promotes the act of turning the corner the hard way, in a manner that is difficult to control using cars specifically designed for track work.
Technically speaking
Drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally or unintentionally oversteers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels or all tyres, while maintaining control from entry to exit of a corner. A car is drifting when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle, to such an extent that often the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g. car is turning left, wheels are pointed right or vice versa).
Modern Vehicles have technology, traction control and suspension designs that enhance stability and road handling characteristics. In an effort to remain fuel efficient most vehicles also lack sufficient power to go around a corner with any sense of style. Manufacturers also build predominantly FWD vehicles while the cars that drift issue power from the rear wheels ie they are RWD.
The Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) has long been a source of relative cheap, nimble and powerful RWD cars. These cars either get exported all around the world or become the source of cheap high performance parts for an extremely hungry global expanding motorsport.Nissan Silvia's, Skylines and Toyota Superas are popular driver choices among the drift fanatics. Many older classic RWD cars are often modded to serve as rally and drift cars. They are relatively heavy (built with thicker steel) but are cheaper to buy.
Drift Mania
Many people describe drifting as motorsport in art form. Playing it in slow motion, one could even describe it as dancing with cars . Motoring enthusiasts love the sport because you see highly skill drivers pushing their machines to the limit while controlling a slide around a corner and maintaining the highest speed possible. To watch these vehicles wrestle with the laws of physics is a sight to behold. The japanese imports scream past with a banshee howl coming from the back and a predatory grumble from the front while a turbo plays a symphony that binds each sound together in a unique and awe shattering melody.
The big sixs and eights hurtle past in an equally terrifying hurricane of awesome. The turbo ceratinly isn't needed as these monsters have plenty of torque from greater displacement. Mad drivers who like to put on a show can certainly find room in the budget and the engine bay for a snail. NOS or Nitrous oxide can also be fitted for those who love flirting especially close with death.
